August 23 Fishing Report

Lake Isabella: Lake is very low but still has very good action on catfish and bass, with almost no fishing pressure. The bass, with the best bite for boat anglers, have been best on crankbaits and spinnerbaits with good topwater action early and late in the day. Fish up to six pounds of better. The catfish action, which is good for boat and shore-bound anglers, have been best on salted garlic clam meat, regular clams, shad and green garlic nightcrawlers. The cats are running up to six pounds. There were also better crappie reports this past week with some anglers finding pockets of fish near flooded boulders and getting full limits. Also a few bluegill still showing.

Kern River: The river remains very low. The trout bite has been fair to good, but the stretch around Kernville has been tough. No recent Department of Fish & Wildlife plants. The lower river is excellent for bass in the Rancheria, Hart Park and Ming Lake stretches. There was a massive thunderstorm Monday that caused two huge rockslide that have closed the road up the canyon and there is some concern the road may not be opened by Labor Day weekend.
